AI and your visual identity: keep your assistant on-brand

More and more copy, posts and designs start with an AI assistant. It writes fluently, but it does not know your brand. The result sounds like everyone else, with colours that are not quite right. Here is how to make your assistant work with your visual identity.

Why AI does not know your brand

A language model knows a lot about the world, but nothing about your internal agreements. It does not know that you address people informally, that you never write ‘solutions’ or that your blue is a very specific shade. Without that context it picks a safe average. And an average brand does not stand out.

Option 1: Paste your guidelines into the prompt

The simplest way is to include your guidelines with every request: a short description of your tone of voice, a few example sentences and your colour codes. It works, but it is error-prone. Everyone pastes a different version, and after an update to the visual identity half the team is still working with the old text.

Option 2: Fixed instructions in your AI tool

Most assistants let you set fixed instructions or a project with documents. That is where you put your tone of voice and the most important rules. It saves pasting, but the instructions live per person or per project. When something changes, you have to update them everywhere.

Option 3: Connect your assistant to the brand manual

With the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an AI assistant can retrieve information from other systems. Connect your assistant to your online brand manual and it fetches the current guidelines, colours, fonts and files itself when it needs them. Change something in the manual and everyone works with the new version straight away.

What matters is that such a connection is read-only. The assistant may consult your brand but cannot change anything. And the connection uses the same permissions as the user: anyone not allowed to see certain files cannot fetch them through AI either.

What to put in your guidelines for AI

Whichever route you choose, these parts make the biggest difference:

  • Tone of voice in plain language, with three example sentences that fit and three that do not.
  • Words you do and do not use, such as product names and fixed terms.
  • Colour codes and fonts, for design and code tasks.
  • A short description of your audience and how you address them.

AI is not a brand check

An assistant with the right context produces better first drafts. But it does not decide whether something is on-brand. Always have someone who knows the brand review the result, especially for material that goes out.

In short

  • AI does not know your brand by default and picks a safe average without context.
  • Pasting and fixed instructions work, but go out of date quickly.
  • A read-only connection to your brand manual keeps AI up to date.
  • Always have a person review material before publication.

Connect Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor read-only to your brand manual.
