Why brand guidelines end up in a drawer

Creating a style guide isn’t the problem. Getting it used is. The figures show a wide gap between having and using.

Having isn’t using

The Lucidpress survey of 452 professionals shows only 30% have guidelines that are known and widely used. 13% have guidelines that aren’t used or can’t be found, and 15% have none at all.

With templates the gap is even wider: 92% have them, but only 16% use them across the organisation.

Why a PDF doesn’t work

A PDF style guide is a snapshot. It sits in someone’s inbox or a folder, isn’t updated and contains no files you can use straight away. Someone who needs a logo quickly won’t open a forty-page document.

SiriusDecisions saw the same with marketing content: much of it went unused, partly because people couldn’t find it.

What does work

Guidelines get used when they are findable, current and directly usable. So: the rule and the file in one place, one click to download or copy, and always the latest version.

That makes the right choice the easiest one, and the chance of off-brand content falls by itself.

How to get guidelines used

  • Put guidelines and files in one place instead of a PDF.
  • Keep one version current and let old versions disappear.
  • Give everyone who works with the brand easy access, without having to ask.
